Carbon Monoxide

Heating season is well upon us. There are several options for heat sources, including systems using either propane, natural gas, or oil.

Carbon Monoxide -What Is It?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Although it has no detectable odor, CO is often mixed with other gases that do have an odor. So, you can
inhale carbon monoxide right along with gases that you can smell and not even know that CO is present.

According to the United States Center for Disease Control, every year nearly 500 people are killed by carbon monoxide (CO). The American Medical Association cites CO as the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States. Without carbon monoxide detectors, this deadly gas can kill you before you even know it’s in your home.

What happens with CO poisoning?

When CO is inhaled at high concentrations, it displaces the oxygen from the hemoglobin in red blood cells. That means the body doesn’t get the oxygen it needs. Symptoms of CO poisoning vary and may sound a lot like the flu — but there’s no fever. One clue may be a pattern of symptoms that occur in the same enclosed space, but that improve outside in fresh air. The most common complaint is a headache. Other symptoms might be feeling tired, nauseated, dizzy, or short of breath. In more serious cases, this can progress to confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, and death.

How can you protect your family?

  • Do have your heating system, water heater and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
  • Do install a battery-operated or battery back-up CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds leave your home immediately and call 911.
  • Do seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseated.
  • Don’t use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window.
  • Don’t run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open.
  • Don’t burn anything in a stove or fireplace that isn’t vented.
  • Don’t heat your house with a gas oven.
  • Don’t use a generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent

Geothermal Tax Credit

Geothermal Tax Credit Reinstated

Tax Credits are back!  On February 9, 2018, Congress retroactively reinstated the clean energy geothermal tax credit for residential and commercial installation of geothermal heat pumps in Dagsboro, DE, Easton, MD and surrounding areas.

What does that mean?

The geothermal tax credit had previously ended in 2016. However, the tax credit is now available for systems installed beginning Jan. 1, 2017 and extended through to Jan. 1, 2022.

How much is the geothermal tax credit?

The tax credit is up to 30% of the total installed cost.  Additionally, Maryland residents qualify for up to a $3000 grant for primary residence geothermal installations.  However,  ductwork and back up heat are excluded.

How do I apply for the Federal Tax Credit?

Once the system is installed, documents are required. Such as, a paid invoice and AHRI certificate are needed when filing year-end taxes. To claim your geothermal tax credit, you need IRS form 5695, Residential Energy Credits, for the year when you had the equipment installed. For example, if you completed a retrofit in 2017, you would fill out the form for 2017, to submit by April 2018.

Who is Eligible for a GHP Tax Credit or MD Grant?

Please consult a tax professional in Rehoboth Beach, DE or Salisbury, MD to determine personal eligibility status. Coastal Comfort cannot determine an individuals eligibility.

Are geothermal heat pumps efficient?

Geothermal heat pumps, as well as all other types of heat pumps, have efficiencies rated according to their coefficient of performance or COP. It’s a scientific way of determining how much energy the system produces versus how much it uses. Most geothermal heat pump systems have COPs of 3-4.5. That means for every unit of energy used to power the system, 3-4.5 units are supplied as heat. Where a fossil fuel furnace may be 78-90 percent efficient, a geothermal heat pump is about 400 percent efficient. Some geothermal heat pump manufacturers and electric utilities use computers to accurately determine the operating efficiency of a system for your home or building.

How do I get started?

Easy! Contact the geothermal experts at Coastal Comfort for a FREE estimate on either a new installation or replacement of the existing geothermal heat pumps in Lewes, DE; Salisbury, MD, and surrounding cities.

HVAC Repair VS Replace

HVAC- Repair VS Replace?

The summer heat is on its way – but will your air conditioning system make it through the season? Spring is a great time to evaluate your existing home air conditioning system.  Typically, a routine maintenance is recommended to make sure your system is running efficiently and properly.  Has your system had multiple repairs? A history of refrigerant leaks?  Trouble maintaining desired temperature?  Rather than waiting for the heat of the summer and crossing your fingers your AC system will make it, below are some factors to consider making a proactive decision.

        1. Age

One of the most important factors in determining to repair or replace existing home HVAC system is the age of the equipment. Typically, the lifespan of an HVAC system is 12-15 years, but residents along the coastline like Rehoboth Beach, DE, Lewes, DE and Ocean City, MD could see a reduction in the lifespan due to the corrosion from salt air.  The older the equipment, not only are breakdowns more susceptible, but equipment is less efficient.

       2. Condition

The overall condition of the air conditioning equipment should be evaluated prior to deciding. If proper system maintenance has been performed annually, the equipment may be in better  condition thus last longer. Whereas, a system that has not been properly maintained, the equipment will probably be in worse condition and less efficient.

       3. R22 Phase Out

In compliance with the EPA, the refrigerant “R-22” is being gradually phased out. The phase out is projected to be complete by 2020. Equipment manufacturers stopped manufacturing R-22 equipment in 2010 and parts are also becoming obsolete.  If your system contains this refrigerant, replacing should be favored. The cost of repairs requiring R-22 (i.e leak repair) has skyrocketed due to high demand and reduced supply.

        4. Sizing

A manual J load calculation could be performed to determine correct sizing. Occasionally, when square footage is added to a home, the existing equipment is used to service that area as well but it may push the system over the limits.  It could be a good time to verify the correct sizing of your equipment to ensure the comfort level of your home.

        5. Efficiency

The energy efficiency has drastically improved over the last 10-15 years.  Rather than spending additional monies to repair an outdated inefficient model, invest those funds towards a new energy efficient system that would help reduce your energy bills

        6.  Costs

Repairs that cost approximately 25% of a new system installation and your system is over 10 years old, it’s recommended to replace the system rather than repair. It’s probably not worth investing $1500-$2500 into a system that is near the end of it’s expected lifespan.

         7. Warranty

Replacement parts typically have a 1-year warranty whereas a new system would have at least a 10-year part warranty.

The first step in determining if your system is ready for AC weather and it’s condition is to hire a licensed HVAC contractor in Millsboro, DE, Lewes, DE, Salisbury, MD, Ocean City, MD and surrounding areas.  Trained service technicians can perform a routine maintenance and evaluate the current condition of the equipment.

HVAC AC Maintenance

Dirty Air Filter Found During Routine Maintenance

Keeping your home heating and air conditioning system maintained with an HVAC AC maintenance can prevent unnecessary calls for HVAC service.  Dirty coils, dirty filters, low refrigerant pressures, and dirty blower assembly reduce the overall efficiency and performance of your air conditioning system. Thus, reducing the lifespan of your equipment and limiting your home comfort level.

During a routine maintenance, our N.A.T.E certified technicians confirm the coils are clean, which ensures proper air flow through the system.  Also, part of the AC service is to check the refrigerant levels. Equipment with low refrigerant levels run longer and often are unable to maintain the desired comfort level. HVAC Contractors in Millsboro, DE, Salisbury, MD surrounding areas can ensure the air conditioning system is running properly and efficiently.

Additionally, dirty filters not only restrict air flow but also allow dirt to cycle through your HVAC system. Once the air passes through the system,  dirt and dust infiltrate the duct work and the air we breathe. Eventually, the dirt builds up on the coil.  In addition, part of our maintenance program is to ensure proper system drainage. AC equipment creates condensation during normal operation. If drain lines are clogged or condensation pumps are not operating properly, this could cause a backup or overflow of water. which could cause damage to the equipment or your home.

Benefits of HVAC AC Maintenance:

  • Better Performing System
  • Longer System Lifespan
  • Technicians can catch issues before the system malfunctions, thus eliminating potential downtime in the event of equipment failure
  • Healthier, cleaner indoor air quality
  • Peace of Mind
  • Preferred Customer Service

Additional Components of HVAC Maintenance

  • Inspect wiring
  • Measure Amp draws
  • Clean Condenser Coil
  • Inspect Ductwork

For larger projects, up to 8 different zones can operate off just 1 outdoor unit.  An  HVAC Contractor in Salisbury, MD can determine the correct sizing for each ductless heat pump zone. Also, you can easily turn the system on and off or make temperature changes with the convenient remote control thermostat. Air handlers are available in a variety of options including suspended from the ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or a wall hung air handler unit.  So, there is an option for just about any application.  HVAC Contractors in Rehoboth  Beach, DE can work with you to determine the best solution to match your needs and budget.

HVAC Maintenance – Is It Important?

Air Conditioning Maintenance

Maintenance on your air conditioning system is important and necessary for your home or business air conditioning system.  Just like your car, air conditioning systems need regular tune ups to ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the equipment.

Not all HVAC issues are preventable, but many service calls can be avoided by proper maintenance of the heating and cooling equipment.  Heat pump and air conditioning systems have evaporator coils and condenser coils that should be cleaned, filters should be replaced regularly, drain lines cleared, and electrical wiring inspected.

A qualified heating and air conditioning technician can discover potential problems before you are without air conditioning in the summer heat and with a broken system.  Some potential problems that could occur if routine maintenance is not performed are:

Dirty Coils: which effect the efficiency and capacity of the system

Clogged Drain:  A clogged drain causes water to not drain properly which can cause water damage to the equipment or even your home- depending on the location of the equipment

Frozen Coils: dirty filters and dirty coils can cause the system to freeze up and operate poorly

Loose Electrical Connections:  during the maintenance all of the electrical connections are inspected

Make an air conditioning maintenance part of your spring cleaning plan. It won’t be too long before you’re relying on your air conditioning system to keep up with the comfort needs of your family during the extreme summer heat coming our way! Maintaining your home HVAC equipment will keep it reliable for years to come.

Why is my heat pump covered in frost?

It is normal for heat pump to have some frost on the outdoor unit during heating mode.   A heat pump pulls the heat from the outdoor air

and into your home. During this process, heat pump ice 2 the humidity/moisture clings to the outdoor units and becomes frost.

Heat pumps are equipped with a defrost sensor and defrost board. The defrost board will go

through automatic defrost every 30,60, or 90 minutes run time depending on the settings.

The defrost sensor works on demand, if it senses a frozen coil it will activate defrost mode as needed.

However, if the following occurs you may have a heat pump maintenance issue

Heat Pump accumulates ice and does not defrost

If your heat pump has been iced over for longer than 30 minutes, it could be an indication that there is a malfunction with the system.

One of our service technicians in the Salisbury, MD and Rehoboth Beach, DE and surroundings area can determine what the issue is.

Heat pump defrosts but frosts up quickly when it’s dry outside

As stated above, it is normal for a heat pump to frost over quickly due to relative humidity, however if the outdoor unit frosts up quickly when relative humidity is low, it could mean the system is low on refrigerant.

A heating and air conditioning contractor can check the charge to determine, locate the leak, repair and recharge the heat pump.

Heat pump defrosts but blows cold air through the vents during defrost cycle

During the heat pump defrost cycle, the outdoor fan shuts down and the auxiliary heat back activates to help keep your house warm.

If you are getting cool air during the defrost cycle, something is wrong with the back-up heat and you will need to schedule a contractor to diagnosis and repair it.

Tech Tips 1: HVAC Equipment in Extreme Cold

Is your home and heating system ready for the extreme cold temperatures coming this weekend? Heat pumps and gas furnaces will be running consistently to maintain a comfortable level in your home.  In our first post of our “Tech Tips” series, we have compiled a list of tips for homeowners to keep in mind during the cold, below freezing temperatures.

technician working on heat pump
  • Leave the thermostat set to the same temperature; refrain from adjusting the temperature by several degrees
    • If you have a heat pump for your home or office, adjusting the thermostat by 3-4 degrees can actually do more harm than good.  The heat pump will call for the back up heat resistance coils to activate, which can be very costly to operate.  Our N.A.T.E certified technicians recommend leaving the thermostat at one temperature or adjusting it by no more than 2 degrees at a time.
  • Set thermostat a few degrees lower than normal
    • This will help conserve energy
  • Heat pumps will run on auxiliary frequently to help maintain temperature
    • The BTU output of the heat pump drops as the outdoor temperature drops. So, depending on the age and how efficient your equipment is, when temperatures outside are well below freezing you could see the auxiliary heat operating more frequently to sustain your home comfort level
  • You may notice the heat pumps, gas furnaces, and geothermal systems are running more than normal- this is to be expected with temperatures below freezing
  • Cover or remove any window air conditioners.
    • This will help eliminate and reduce cold air intrusion
  • Disconnect hose from outdoor faucet to prevent busting pipes
  • Drip hot and cold faucets in kitchen and bath. Drip single control faucets with lever set in middle.
  • Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, electric heat tape, or a portable space heater to thaw frozen pipes that have not burst.
  • Bring in container plants, add mulch around plants, and cover plants that are prone to frost damage. Remove covering when temperatures warm above freezing.
  • Bring pets indoors
  • Cover drafty windows/doors to prevent cold air intrusion

If you need emergency heating service in the Rehoboth Beach, DE, Salisbury, MD, or surrounding areas, Coastal Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning has 24 hour on call certified technicians and repair service available. Stay warm Delmarva!
